(Please be sure not to teach the words before we teach them in class.  I have had a few students come in knowing which word I was going to teach next.  We like the process to be a learning experience for them, and we have a specific way of teaching the words and sounds.  Thank you!)

Week of Nov. 2- 6

Phonemic Awareness- giving beginning sounds of words, giving all of the sounds of words.

Math: Length (week 1 of 2).  We will be using blocks, hands, feet, etc. to measure different things.  You will see this in their homework.  We will not be using rulers or tape measures.

History: Beginning our Christopher Columbus Unit.  We will begin by introducing them to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, and the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Science: The Life Cycle of a Chicken

Spalding: Introduce: the "er's".  Her first nurse works early.  This is a sentence we use to help the students remember the "er's" and use the words as cues so the students know which "er" we want.
Monday- er (as in her), ir (as in first)
Tuesday- ur (as in nurse), wor (as in works), ear (as in early)

Spalding: Introduce: ay, ai (cue: not used), oy, oi (cue: not used).  We say not used because we can not use ai or oi at the end of a word.  Students will know which phonogram we are asking them to write when we say ai "not used" or oi "not used". 

Spelling words: go r. 4 ("o" may say o at the end of a syllable), at, on

Please review previous phonograms using the phonogram cards on a daily basis.  Add the new phonograms in as we learn them in class.  We learn one new phonogram a day.( ay- Monday, ai- Tuesday, oy- Wednesday, oi- Thursday).
We will have markings of the spelling words Monday-Wednesday.  On Thursday, we will not place the markings on the homework.  We do not want students to write the markings on the Spelling test, so not practicing markings on Thursday will help.   



Week of Oct. 20- 23

Math: Shapes- 3 dimensional (Math groups start Wednesday)

Spalding: Review all of the previous phonograms.  Introduce spelling words: me (r. 4- "e may say e at the end of a syllable), do ("o" makes the 3rd sound), and. Student will practice these words in class on Monday and then review on homework each night.  Friday, we will have a Spelling Test on these three words.


Week of Oct. 12- 16

Literature: Book- Grasshopper and Ant

Saying- The early bird gets the worm.

Math: Shapes- 2 dimensional

Spalding: New Phonograms include: Mon- /ou/, Tues- /oo/, Weds.- /ch/, Thurs. /ar/ Continue working on the other phonograms with the phonogram cards.
** Again, if you were unable to attend Spalding Night, please let me know so that I may send home the Spalding Formation and Marks paper.

There will be no History or Science on Half Days.


Week of Sept. 28- Oct. 1

History: We will introduce Thomas Edison and his inventions, and continue with him after conferences.

Continue to review the first 26 phonograms and add these to your daily oral review only after we have introduced them in class.

Week of Sept. 21- 25

Literature: Book- Dog and His Shadow

Math: Counting, sequencing, and what number is missing

History: Arizona (continued).  We will be reading Cactus Hotel and talking about the desert habitat and animals found in Arizona.

Science: Farming- Plants we use for food (crops) and farm animals

Spalding: Review the first 26 phonograms.  Briefly introduce capital letters.  Work on handwriting: Practice writing First and Last Names.
Continue practicing phonogram cards at home each night, along with Spalding handwriting.  Phonogram test will be given on Friday. 



Week of Sept. 13- 17

Literature: Book- Little Red Riding Hood
Poem- A Dillar, A Dollar
Saying:Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Math: Numbers to 10, Number Line. Please spend time each night working on number formation.  It is important that they are starting at the correct spot. 

History: Arizona

Science: Plants- Different Types of Trees; deciduous, evergreen

Spalding: w, x, y, z. Students should be reviewing phonograms with an adult and their phonogram cards nightly.  A phonogram test will be given on Friday.  This test will be very similar to last week's test. 



Week of Sept. 8- 11

Literature: Book- Casey Jones
Poem: Happy Thought
Saying: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Math: Numbers to 10.  We are focusing on handwriting and starting each number in the correct spot.  Numbers are written a little above the midpoint.

History: North America continued.

Science: Plants.  We will be begin our bean planting by placing the beans in plastic bags to start the germination process.

Spalding: p, r, t, v.  Students should be reviewing phonograms with an adult and their phonogram cards nightly.  A phonogram test will be given on Friday.


Week of August 31- Sept. 4

Literature: Book- Johnny Apple Seed (pg. 133 in WYKNTK)
Poem: Tommy (pg. 37 in WYKNTK)
Saying: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Math: Numbers to 5, handwriting (Make sure each number starts lower than our tall letters and touches the baseline.  2's are written with the loop at the bottom.)

History: North America (U.S., Canada, Mexico)

Science: Apples

Spalding: new phonograms: "j, k, l, m, n".  Continue reviewing old phonograms.  Students should be able to identify the sounds to you and know which sound matches which phonogram.



Week of August 24- 28

Literature: Book- Three Little Pigs (pg. 52 in WYKNTK)
Poem: The More It Snows
Saying: Great oaks from little acorns grow.

Math: Numbers to 5.  Not only will we be counting things to 5, we will be working on their handwriting.  Students will especially need practice with 2.

History: American Symbols- Pledge of Allegiance, White House, and Mount Rushmore (pg.207)

Science: Seasons and weather- Winter/ Snow
